Danebury

project 2021 / 22

A response to the Iron Age hillfort at Danebury
With thanks to Sarah Maddison and team for organising the exhibition, and to the archaeologist and staff of the Museum for the iron Age for their enthusiasm in sharing their knowledge

"Responding to place and time"

Two quite different things struck me on my visits to Danebury and the Museum.
On my first visit to the Hillfort, I was moved by the magnificent beech trees, and the knowledge that so many had been planted since the excavations but now stand tall around the perimeter of the site.
Visiting the Museum and reading Sir Barry Cunliffe's books, I was intrigued by the chalk grain store pits - the chemistry of the reaction between grain and chalk, the beehive shape of the pits and the sheer number and sizes of pits found on one site.
Both beech and chalk feature in my pieces for the exhibition
